Climate change is often in the news, with the threat of changing and more vicious weather patterns on the horizon. Whilst there are many causes of climate change, the villain that is mainly singled out is carbon dioxide, and that is why we are told to reduce our carbon emissions, or our "carbon footprint".
Individually any changes that we make to reduce our carbon footprint may seem small, even insignificant. But like voting, the more people do it, the bigger difference it makes.
Turning off lights, walking rather than taking the car all help in terms of carbon reduction. But there are occasions when we need to drive the car, and even public transport emits carbon.
To tackle this we can invest in carbon offsetting schemes. This is where action is taken to either absorb or prevent the emission carbon dioxide equivalent to your own carbon footprint.
There are a range of carbon offset projects in Africa based around energy efficiency that prevent carbon from being released. Planting trees can also help, as they naturally absorb carbon as they grow.
